Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most formidable challenges I faced was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be among your foremost concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to fellow students. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be genuine. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to find like-minded individuals.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several strategies helped me cope with this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost guarantee that others share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from both your colleagues and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to develop relationships with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
On a broader scale, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
