Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and for prospective students, it may be a major concern. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can affirm that I have formed some of the best friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, stemming from light conversations with others in similar situations. What have I taken away from this? Taking a leap at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you aren’t prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections. Moreover, be yourself. With such a diverse crowd at the university, you are guaranteed to find individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might perceive yourself as less capable than others. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that we are all in the same situation. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and staff!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and maintain continuous dialogue with us regarding our challenges. I only began utilizing the pastoral support towards the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously spoke about taking risks – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with the support accessible from both staff and students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
