Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging in something unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of beginning university, and if you are a potential student, it may be something you’re concerned about. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all commenced with brief conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a rise in demands compared to A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone finds themselves in a similar situation. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and staff!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want to see you succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty members, and it is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to seize the available support. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the available support from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
