Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
A significant and initially intimidating obstacle was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a major worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too frightened to emerge and meet new people. Now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I found out that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities designed to help you engage with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like you.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the level of difficulty. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things assisted me through this, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly promise others are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and remain in constant communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key insight from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much of it!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
