Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Reflecting on the year, I recognize a period of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking aspects of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, however, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of small talk with fellow students in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate interactions with others. I also learnt that if you can embody just one thing, be genuine. There are a plethora of varied individuals within the program and university; you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic demands and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in managing that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are others who share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are aware that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really engage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances— I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it is unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the assistance that is available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has underscored for me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are often misguided and can be mitigated by the myriad of support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
