By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester kick-off, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to go out and meet others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the closest friends here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I found that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and occasions to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was handling the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is on the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, you can almost bet others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next topic. The staff in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to flourish and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the term’s close, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for your own growth! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance offered. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the myriad support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m not isolated and how to find joy despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
