By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, ten months ago, I felt anxious and uncertain about embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing something unfamiliar was unlike my typically reserved self. Looking back on the past year, I realize it was a journey of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was making friends. This can be daunting when beginning university, and incoming students may feel apprehensive about it. On my first day in residence, I remained in my room, feeling too shy to engage with others. Now, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the best friendships at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready, that’s okay! There are numerous ice-breakers and events designed to help you connect with others. Be authentic, and you’ll discover like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting may impact your self-esteem; you might compare yourself unfavorably to others. Remember, everyone experiences the same challenges. If you struggle with something, others are likely facing similar issues. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is vital during the first year. Look for support from your peers and faculty!

The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had reached out sooner. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the staff, a beneficial experience. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. You can never receive too much!

This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness about university are often misplaced and can be alleviated through the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
