Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hardships, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant concern for new university entrants. On my initial day of moving into my accommodations, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and socialize. Today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. I realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is most beneficial. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with fellow students. Also, be true to yourself. With such a diverse population at the university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel lesser compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is essential to learn during your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and maintain communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with the staff, a beneficial experience. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to maximize the support available. There’s no such thing as too much!

This year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are typically baseless and can be alleviated through the support available from staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
