Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university is undoubtedly one of the more formidable challenges, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my dorm, just days before classes officially began, I spent the whole day ensconced in my room due to my apprehension about stepping out and meeting others. However, sitting here now, I can proudly state that I have forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that above all else, being yourself is paramount. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even steeper progression from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome this mindset, one being the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that several others are also struggling. Therefore, request assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from both your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are dedicated to your success and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being extended to you. You can never have too much help!
In broad terms, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are generally unfounded and can be eased by the vast array of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has helped me learn how to have fun while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
