Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself into such an unfamiliar environment was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year abundant in personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing obstacles was the task of forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more intimidating aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your top worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to step out and meet new people. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with individuals in analogous situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that making the first move at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t quite feel prepared or at ease, no need for worry! There will be ample ice-breaker activities and events designed to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embody one essence, let it be your true self. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re destined to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; witnessing others studying may lead you to feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the acknowledgement that everyone shares the same experiences as you. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can nearly assure you that several others are, too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next highlight. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and ensure consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I noted earlier about taking risks at the outset—I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build rapport with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased by the plethora of support options provided by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m not alone in this journey, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
