Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making connections. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, accomplished by engaging in casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, it’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of people throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals.
An additional challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an environment can be taxing on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors helped me overcome this sensation, one being the assurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most important lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They connect with students and uphold constant communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
