Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
A significant and intimidating hurdle was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the most rewarding friendships here at this university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting from casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, I can almost guarantee that others find themselves in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the staff!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to our struggles and maintain consistent communication throughout the year addressing our concerns. I didn’t maximize the benefits of pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various methods to connect with faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your own well-being! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the available assistance. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior and during university, are frequently unjustified and can be eased with the diverse support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to relish my experiences despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
