Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period rich in personal growth, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons have I gained from this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to my fear of stepping out and greeting others. Now, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I have ever had, at this university and within this program. I’ve cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to encourage interaction with others. I also found that the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the program and university, you’re bound to connect with like-minded people.

Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that feeling, one being the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you happen to find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that several others are likely experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the healthiest actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be alleviated by the diverse range of support options available through faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
