Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was far from what my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in the same boat. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also discovered that above all, you should just be yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might see others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. What helped me navigate that sensation was the awareness that everyone is enduring similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking strides – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s surely one of the wisest actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson regarding this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the various support systems accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
