Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently among the most daunting when starting university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant worry. On my moving-in day, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, now I can confidently assert that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and everything kicked off with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I came to realize that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you interact with others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was balancing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and even more pronounced from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can strain your confidence; seeing others study might cause feelings of inadequacy. A few strategies helped me navigate this emotion, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others share your confusion. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy towards students and keep lines of communication open throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never receive too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the ample support systems present from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
