Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding my future. As I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student, venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the primary and most intimidating tasks was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it may be a considerable worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to leave and introduce myself to others. As I sit here today, I can assertively say that I have forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced, both at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in light conversation with those facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes impact your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. Their desire is for you to flourish and they recognize that students experience difficulties. They empathize with pupils and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the well-being support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself in spite of stressors like exams and deadlines.
