Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced a swirl of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and private self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve built some of the most rewarding friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with light conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking risks at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being your authentic self is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is dealing with similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are struggling as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show compassion and keep us regularly informed about our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year was almost over, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and this is one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the offered assistance. You can never have too much backing!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never solitary and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
