Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was ready for. Looking back now, I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate your connection with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a notable increase from A-levels, and in several ways, a more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me during this experience, one being the reminder that we are all in the same predicament. If you struggle with something, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most important lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the challenges encountered by students. They are sympathetic towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
