Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy self was used to. Reflecting now, I realize this year has been one of personal development, challenges, and immense pleasure. But what have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for newcomers to university life. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Currently, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some incredible friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with peers in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s wise to take a chance at the year’s onset. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events exist to facilitate connections. Additionally, be true to yourself. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the materials. There was a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and an even greater leap between the first and second terms. This can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. Remember, everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, others probably are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is vital during your initial year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They engage with us continuously throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s arguably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the available support. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has revealed that anxieties surrounding university life are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the assistance from both staff and students. I’ve discovered I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures from exams and due dates.
