Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not an experience my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year marked by personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This can feel daunting when beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a major concern. On my first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the entire day in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? It’s wise to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events are available to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can embody just one quality, be yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded people.

Another hurdle I encountered was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your confidence; you might feel less capable in comparison to others. However, keep in mind that everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, others likely are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to peers and staff for support!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to achieve and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing dialogue about our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can create for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illuminated that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst exam-related stress and looming deadlines.
