Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. As a first-year student about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering, stepping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and withdrawn nature was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often among the most frightening when commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the first day of my move into my accommodation, which was a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Now, as I reflect on my experiences, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, both in this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated with simple conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I come to understand? I’ve learned that making a bold move at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! Countless ice-breaker opportunities and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that above all, being yourself is crucial. With the rich diversity present across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

An additional obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through this feeling, one being the realization that everyone shares similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled too. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to our struggles and keep us updated throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged earlier. I noted the importance of taking leaps previously – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity allowed me to connect with the staff members, an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and this is undoubtedly among the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support that is available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the variety of support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
