Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year overflowing with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the quest to make friends. This is frequently one of the most troubling aspects of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day retreating into my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever made, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which initially grew from simple conversations with others in the same boat. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and opportunities to meet others. I also understood that the key is to just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.
Another challenge I faced was the level of workload and the complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a challenging environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; seeing others study might make you feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me manage these feelings, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, I can almost guarantee that there are others who are equally puzzled. So, reach out for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend that students face difficulties. They relate to students and ensure ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I referenced earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is an immense benefit. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the broad array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
