Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my dorm, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too shy to venture out and meet others. However, today I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s advantageous to take risks at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely ready or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also found that if you can embody one trait, be authentic to yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and campus, you are sure to connect with those who align with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you have trouble grasping a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are, too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep us informed through ongoing communication about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the available support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are many paths to connect with faculty, and it is certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this segment of university life is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much help!

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished with the various support resources accessible from faculty and peers. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
