Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of fun! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it could be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my new accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the entirety of the day concealed in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most enduring friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge revolved around the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be a blow to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate by comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you encounter something you don’t comprehend, I can nearly guarantee that others are grappling with the same issue. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff within the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students may face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps—well, I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own advantage! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to maximize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the myriad support options provided by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
