Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t worry! There will be several ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is vital. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are bound to find those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable jump from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re having trouble understanding something, there’s a good chance others are as well. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with students and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be diminished with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
