Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most formidable challenges was making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my housing, just days before the term began, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room due to my fear of stepping out and introducing myself to others. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always advantageous to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for icebreakers and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can sometimes shake your confidence; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support being offered to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!

On a broader scale, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
