Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not a scenario my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of commencing university, and for any prospective students reading this, it may rank as one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet today, I can assertively state that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I derive? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in some instances, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this kind of atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may notice others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is sharing this journey. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Look for support from both peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing communication about our difficulties. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I noted the importance of taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are various methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often irrational and can be alleviated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
