Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and for prospective students, it might be a major worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to go out and socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some amazing friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I gathered? It’s beneficial to make an effort at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Many ice-breaker activities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of people in the program and university, you’re sure to find those with similar interests.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even steeper ascent from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same path. If you’re struggling with a concept, chances are others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be one of the most crucial lessons of the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They truly wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication about our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – one leap I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary message is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much help!
In general, this year has shown me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with the support from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never truly alone and how to enjoy myself in spite of stressors like exams and deadlines.
