Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and where do I find myself today?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can often be among the most frightening facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Nevertheless, sitting here now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with striking up conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s crucial to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you bond with others. I also realized that above all, you should be yourself. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you will certainly encounter those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me during this time was the acknowledgment that everyone is grappling with the same challenges. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to absorb in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are dedicated to your success and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion for students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking bold steps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are myriad opportunities to engage with faculty, and it ranks among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even in the face of pressures like exams and deadlines.
