Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting facets of initiating university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may rank among your largest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too daunted to go out and meet others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all thanks to initiating small dialogues with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s important to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities to facilitate your interaction with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re destined to encounter those who share your interests.
Another challenge was managing the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an increase in expectations compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel out of your depth. A few strategies assisted me through this, one being the assurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle to understand something, I can nearly promise that others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and consistently communicate throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking chances earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to get acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and this is one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support provided. You can never have an excess of help!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
