Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of fun! But what have I absorbed this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are perusing this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the greatest friendships of my life, both at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I concluded? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others are equally perplexed. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They connect with students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance provided. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find joy even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
