Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end was something my formerly shy and reserved self wasn’t used to. Looking back now, I reflect on an academic year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what did this year instill in me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most daunting obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightful parts of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the semester start, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I have ever made at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was sparking small conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to make a move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be many opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse crowd across the program and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who also find it confusing. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your freshman year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter challenges. They understand our struggles and keep lines of communication open throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own sake! My main lesson from this university experience is to make the most of the assistance being provided. You can never have an excess of help!

On a broader scale, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both in the lead-up to and during university, are nearly always exaggerated and can be eased with the abundant support options available from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
