Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most frightening elements of entering university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I come to understand? I realized that it’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to aid you in meeting others. I’ve also learned that embracing your true self is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the coursework and its challenging nature. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, and an even bigger adjustment from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel less competent. What aided me was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp a concept, likely others are in the same situation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson learned during the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges faced by students. They relate to our concerns and keep in consistent contact with us. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy in my experiences, despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
