Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my present state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with small conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s best to take the plunge at the year’s start. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaker events to aid in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you might feel inadequate compared to your peers. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson for the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They express empathy and keep us informed about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me build rapport with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be diminished with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
