Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into this new environment wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your largest worries. On my first day moving into my housing, a few days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unready or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With so many different individuals across the university and the course; you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel that you don’t measure up. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a couple of others who find it perplexing too. So, seek assistance. This may be one of the most crucial lessons to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking chances at the beginning; I indeed took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support that’s being offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to have a good time in tandem with stressors such as exams and assignments.
