Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved persona was used to. Upon reflection, I now recognize a year teeming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. However, what insights have I gained, and where am I at this moment?
One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and interact with others. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with those in similar situations. What did I come to realize? It’s essential to take that leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a wide array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to discover like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable jump from A-levels, and an even more substantial one from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can pose a challenge to your self-esteem; you might notice others studying and feel inferior. What benefited me was remembering that everyone is in the same situation. If you struggle to grasp something, chances are others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was coming to a close, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to meet staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated with the support from staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
