Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty concerning the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university can be daunting, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a major concern. On my initial day moving into accommodation, just days before the term started, I isolated myself in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and in my program. I’ve formed a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you aren’t prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaking events to help you engage with others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With a variety of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.

Another obstacle was juggling the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even bigger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the realization that everyone shares similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, it’s likely that others do too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Ask for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy myself even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
