Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people facing similar experiences. So, what did I discover? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and campus, you will inevitably find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was coping with the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being in such a competitive atmosphere can challenge your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show compassion and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding any issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
