Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my typically reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path marked by personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be daunting when entering university, and if you are a future student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole time in my room, too fearful to step outside and mingle. Now, I can proudly say I have forged some of my closest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with brief conversations with others in similar situations. The takeaway? Take a chance at the year’s onset. If you’re not prepared, don’t stress! There are ample ice-breaking events that can aid in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you will discover peers who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant difference from A-levels and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. This setting can undermine your confidence, and you may feel out of place compared to your classmates. Keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If you’re puzzled by something, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is essential during your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They consistently keep us informed about our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to interact with staff members—a truly rewarding experience. There are multiple avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself. Make the most of the resources available; you can never have too much assistance!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by both staff and students. I’ve realized I’m never isolated and discovered how to have fun even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
