Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and for potential students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into accommodation, just days before the semester started, I ended up spending the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. However, today I can proudly state that I have made some of the best friends I could have wished for at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in the same situation. So, what did I discover? It’s always advisable to take a risk at the start of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with people. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With such a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel less competent. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee others are equally perplexed. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize the difficulties that students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke about taking risks before – I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the many support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
