Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was equipped for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what has this past year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting factors when starting university, and if you find yourself reading this as a future student, it may very well be one of your foremost worries. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, just days prior to the commencement of term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to exit and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With such a diverse range of individuals present across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I had to navigate was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes take a toll on your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel as though you fall short. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that a few others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They are empathetic towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking leaps – I embraced one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance that is available to you. You can never have too much support!
In general, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the extensive range of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has guided me to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
