Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, afraid, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshmen student. Diving into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might rank high among your worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and greet others. Sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, all it required was engaging in small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I learned that seizing the opportunity at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re feeling a bit unprepared or uneasy, fret not! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you could embody one thing, it is to be yourself. There is a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to find like-minded people.
Another challenge I needed to tackle was the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was surely a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial jump from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me overcome those feelings, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something eludes your understanding, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others in the same position. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and from staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and communicate regularly with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t engage much with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sought it out sooner. I spoke earlier about taking bold steps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the support available to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the many support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and how to find enjoyment amidst the stressors such as exams and deadlines.
