Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my once shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever encountered, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with simple conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker moments and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and the university, you are sure to find individuals who share your outlook.

Another obstacle I encountered was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in particular, a significantly larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can virtually assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and keep consistent communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to establish rapport with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance that is extended to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even in the face of stressors like examinations and deadlines.
