Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, all it took was striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. There are a variety of individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me through that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If something is unclear, I can almost guarantee there are several others who are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Ask for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and sustain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had prioritized it earlier. As I mentioned, I took a leap at the beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased by the myriad of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
