Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just before the term commenced, I isolated myself in my room for an entire day, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I come to understand? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to facilitate your connections with others. Additionally, above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community among the students and the university, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the extent of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked escalation from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. Being in such a challenging environment can influence your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What assisted me was remembering that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. So, do seek assistance. This could be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties that students encounter. They empathize with us and keep in touch throughout the academic year. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not utilizing it sooner. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the finest choices you can make for your personal growth! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance that’s available. You can never have too much support!
This past year has broadly demonstrated to me that anxieties surrounding university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the available support from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
