Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back, I realize that the year has been laden with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and interact with others. Now, I can proudly claim that I have made some of the best friends at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others facing similar situations. What did I come to understand? It’s advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t ready or don’t feel at ease, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be authentically yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the demands of schoolwork and the complexity of the material. There was a marked leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the initial term to the subsequent one. Being in such a setting can impact your self-confidence; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and lecturers!

This transitions me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They are empathetic and keep continual communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had availed myself of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to build connections with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the aid available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and taught me how to have fun despite the pressure from exams and deadlines.
