Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt nervous and apprehensive about the future as I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year rich with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most overwhelming obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a considerable worry. On my initial day moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and socialize. Presently, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, all sparked by casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you engage with others. Moreover, if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to your peers. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson from the first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They are understanding and maintain open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the opportunities for assistance provided. You can never receive too much support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never truly alone and how to have fun despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
