Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize I experienced a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects when beginning university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your main worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and meet people. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of small talk with others in similar situations. So, what lesson did I gather? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a step forward at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With so many varied individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and level of difficulty in the content. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally lost. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep in consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t really utilize pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking leaps – I made one early in the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the assistance offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the plethora of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
