Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may pose a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I learn? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the amount of work and the level of difficulty of the content. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can influence your self-esteem; you may feel inferior in comparison to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Seek help from your classmates and faculty!
The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep the lines of communication open with us throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking risks – I took one by stepping in as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it is one of the most beneficial actions you can take! My primary takeaway is to seize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
This year has taught me that anxious feelings regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be lessened with the support from staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to have fun even amid the pressure from exams and deadlines.
