Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fears, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships during my time here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced from casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.
An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an atmosphere can be taxing on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me through that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support provided. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased with the myriad of support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even while facing stressors like exams and deadlines.
